8/6 Across the Pagan Vastlands of Arizona

Today we woke up after a refreshing night's sleep at the magnificent abode of Dave's Tempe buddy, Chason. He furnished us with cinnamon waffles, hard-boiled eggs, toast, cereal and some Snapple Iced Teas and we watched some more of the Ulver DVD while we got ready for the 6 hour (roughly) drive to San Diego. At high noon we left the apartment, took some sweet pics with our immensely hospitible host, and shoved off.
"pleased to meet you!"

what a delightfully orange bandanna

Before making any serious headway we hit up a guitar center and a "Supermercado de Wal-Mart" for some supplies. Soon enough though we were out of Phoenix and into the horrible, horrible Arizona desert. It was cool (interesting that is) at first, but pretty quickly the natural beauty of the desert was outweighed by the oppressive 110 degree weather blowing scorching wind into our vehicle. We drove and drove and drove through the wastelands (even dipped through Mexico for a second) until finally we started climbing in elevation an hour and a half outside of San Diego. To pick up the energy we put on Keep of Kalessin's "Armada" and cranked Karl's stereo which gave us the necessary boost to make it to our destination. It turns out we didn't have to be nervous about being a half hour late for the eight O' clock load in as when we arrived we found that the only other band dropped off the bill. The friendly sound man (who coincidentally was the spitting image of John Stewart only with more tatoos) gave us free reign as when to load in and play. We went on at around 10:30 and played for a rather small crowd but everyone had a good time (hey at least Dave didn't break a string this show!) After chilling with some locals in the parking lot and listening to the engraged screams of an insane woman a couple of buildings away, we set out for my sister's house (Joe here btw) in Irvine, rocking out to Unleash the Archers. We made it to Irvine by 2am or so and Kim was there to receive us and treat us to a delicious homemade birthday cake and milk despite her having to wake up at 7am for her first day of work (you're the best, Kim!). We made ourselves comfortable amongst her roomates' highly inquisitive cats and drifted off to sleep, ready to take on LA tomorrow!

Mr. Chill
